The mix master
DJ Hero delivers an all-new interactive music experience that allows you to rule the party and not only experience; but hear music in a brand new way. The title also features over 100 individual songs, highlighted in over 80 unique mixes that blend a huge variety of music genres, including hip hop, R&B, pop, rock and electronica.
Delivering one of the most diverse and international collection of tracks ever assembled in a rhythm music game, DJ Hero incorporates anthems from a huge selection of legendary artists including Eminem, Grandmaster Flash, Blondie, The Beastie Boys, Queen and Daft Punk.
Spinning the wheel of steel
Designed exclusively for DJ Hero, the turntable controller immerses you into the authenticity of DJ culture and a sea of music as you utilise and master various DJ techniques including scratching, blending, cross-fading and sampling, while leaving room for a variety of funky effects, samples and scratches, transforming you into the life of the party.
Much like you use the Guitar Hero, you match musical beats to the coloured buttons, although even Guitar Hero aficionados should pay close attention to the extremely in-depth tutorial narrated by the game's star, Grandmaster Flash. Here, the hip hop DJ takes you through all the basics such as button taps, scratching, cross-fading, effects, rewind and Euphoria, the game equivalent of Star Power found in the Guitar Hero series.
Once you begin the game you can select from a range of characters, and you can unlock more as you progress by accomplishing feats such as completing a set list with no less than five stars. You can customise each character with everything from stage clothes to decks, deck decals and even headphones. Once you're happy, it's time to hit the club scene and start playing like a superstar DJ to the pumping crowds.
To begin with, the majority of the game's set lists are locked, and the further you progress, the more you unlock and add to DJ Hero's Quick Play mode. The higher you score in each game the more bonus extras you open up such as additional decks, outfits and venues to showcase your DJing skills. The deeper you delve into the game, the harder it becomes to complete sets with a full five stars on the board, meaning you'll have to really master DJ Hero if you want to unlock those more elusive tracks.
DJ Hero can be challenging to grasp at the outset, and though you may stumble a few times during some of the game's trickier tracks, but you will walk away with a solid grounding in the game's control system by perfecting your co-ordination between cross-fading, Euphoria, button taps and scratching.
Once you've mastered this, you can move on to the Hard difficulty setting, and eventually Expert, where things become much more intricate. You'll be required to perform scratches in forward and reverse directions coupled with cross-fade spikes, which are fast movements either to the left or right using the cross-fader before centring it quickly again. Challenging, yes, though immense fun and hugely satisfying once you've grasped it.
Compete for the beat
With DJ competitions playing a large role in the ever-growing DJ culture, from impromptu battles to the DMC World DJ Championships, inclusion of the DJ vs. DJ competitive game mode is a natural fit. The game gives you the option to battle head-to-head with other players around the world online or in the comfort of your own living room provided you have an additional turntable.
You can join in to emcee over any track in the game with a mic or, using a Guitar Hero guitar controller along with a turntable controller, you can perform a selection of slick DJ and guitar focused mixes, for the ultimate rock and funk mash-up. There are also a number of downloadable tracks available on PlayStation Store with plenty more to follow. These include the Extended Mix Pack featuring mash-ups of Mary J. Blige's All Of Me and Queen's Radio Ga Ga, and Gorillaz's DARE and Public Enemy's Can't Truss It.
Look out for other remixes arriving on PlayStation Store by house music superstar David Guetta and a host of other deck spinning masters. With so many ways to play the game either on your own or with a friend, DJ Hero offers up a huge variety of gameplay and one the most enthralling rhythm music experiences available on PlayStation 3.
