The People vs: Killzone 3

PS3™

Aryeh Loeb, producer at Guerrilla Games, answers questions from the PlayStation Community about the mighty Killzone 3.

What first inspired you to create the Killzone series? (Just4Fun0070, Portugal)

Our inspiration came from many different things. The series started with a very simple notion: create the ultimate evil, transport it into the future and keep recognizable elements. It is important for us to have our roots in reality – realistic guns with bullets – while adding a science fiction element to the overall experience.

Do you prefer to play Killzone 3 with or without PlayStation Move? (NICKY_OM_13, France)

It depends on who you ask, and that's a good thing! Avid DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller players will probably stick with that, while new players will probably prefer PlayStation Move. Put the PlayStation Move motion controller in the sharp shooter and hardcore players will tend to choose that instead. The point is that we've provided great alternatives for everyone. And you can pick your favourite option.

Can we keep all the items and scores earned playing the Open Beta version of the game or will we have to start afresh? (DiabolikMind, Italy)

Unfortunately, we can't. The point of the Beta is to test the game. We are still experimenting with the game, XP Points, Unlock Points and abilities. These are all subject to change after a Beta is concluded. In the Beta you might spend points on an ability that does not exist anymore in the final game. It would become an impossible process to manage and it would give a very unfair advantage to people who buy the game when it hits the stores.

When can we play as the Helghast in the Campaign Mode? In the multiplayer of Killzone 2 I almost exclusively played as Helghast. (Lord_Gremlin, Russia)

Ha! Wouldn't that be cool? Killzone tells the story of the ISA. But in Killzone 3 you do get a sneak peek of what it might be like to play as the Helghast. The Killzone universe is big – who knows what will happen in the future?

What did you aim to improve on from previous Killzone games, and do you feel you've achieved that? (Tr3blA38, Spain)

It was very important to get more variety into Killzone 3. Not only in environments, such as snow and jungle levels, but also in gameplay, tempo, enemies and set pieces. The idea is that you never know what is around the corner in Killzone 3. And I think we have succeeded.

The Helghast are very much the anti-villains in the series. When you created Killzone, did you intend for this to happen or did it occur naturally as the story progressed? (Pin-Pin-Ire, UK)

A lot of those things progress as the story evolves, yes. But I wouldn't say that the Helghast are completely right – or wrong. If anything, the Killzone universe and the stories within it show that the line between good and evil is quite blurry. It is not always easy to mark one person as good and another as bad. We like that difficult line. It's an interesting one to explore.

When creating the weapons, were there any strange ones that didn't quite make the cut? (Kermit1970, UK)

For Killzone 3, I think we got everything in that we wanted. But we tinkered with different effects for the Nuclear Petrusite Gun before we settled on the current implementation. At one point it worked more like a gravity gun which propelled enemies away and blew them up afterwards, including everything it touched, but that was way too powerful and didn't fit with Killzone 3.

How come I can't bash someone's head into a wall? (XxFaHiZzLexX, UK)

You should, it's fun! Well, in a game it is. Not in real life, of course. Try Brutal Melees out with some environmental objects nearby, preferably a high wall. That should do the trick.

Will there be Killzone 3 avatars available at PlayStation Store any time soon? (LemonTea_15, Germany)

Yes, and I've seen them already! More info on Killzone.com soon.

Killzone 3 is seen as the stereoscopic 3D game for PlayStation 3. How did it feel for you guys to lead the 3D charge, and did you feel any pressure? (fantasyfreak, Netherlands)

The pressure we feel is pressure that we put on ourselves. Once we decided to build the game in stereoscopic 3D from the ground up, we knew we had to deliver. But that is where the fun starts. Making things look perfect is not only our job, but also our passion. And we think it has paid off.
