Beneath that cover was the start of the most successful series in PlayStation history; one that would redefine the driving genre with ultrarealistic graphics and handling.</p> <p></p> <p><b>Gran Turismo</b> fused the excitement of arcade racing with the realism of a simulation and boasted nearly 200 cars – far more than any other racing game at the time. Players could test their skills to obtain the racing licences that allowed them to compete in events, and prize money could then be spent on the world's most luxurious cars plus new parts to tune their performance. This level of detail had never been seen before and soon <b>Gran Turismo</b> was the talk of the real-life racing world as well as the gaming one.</p> <p><b>The evolution of a driving experience</b></p> <p><b><br /></b></p> <p><b>Gran Turismo 2</b> followed two years later, upping the stable of cars to an astonishing 650, thanks to the enthusiasm of the series' creator, Kazunori Yamauchi. As a connoisseur of cars both classic and new, he helped forge a close bond between developer Polyphony Digital and the car manufacturers themselves.</p> <p>"Relationships with manufacturers have always been very important," explains Yamauchi. "And that's because the cars which we cover in the game are something that is open to society. <b>Gran Turismo</b> is always looking to communicate with the world outside of the games industry."</p> <p>PlayStation 2 arrived in Europe in 2000 and the world waited to see how Polyphony would use the new hardware. The answer came a year later with <b>Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec</b>, a game that would make casual observers do a double take when they found out they were watching a video game rather than a real race.</p> <p><b>Speeding up</b></p> <p><b><br /></b></p> <p>Before <b>Gran Turismo 4</b> arrived there was <b>Gran Turismo 4 Prologue</b>, which gave a taste of the next major evolution in the series. Launched in 2005, <b>Gran Turismo 4</b> included more than 700 cars from 80 manufacturers, from the 1886 Daimler Motor Carriage to concept cars looking as far ahead as 2022.</p> <p>The game also introduced B-Spec mode, allowing players to move away from the driving seat and into the role of race manager. Driving missions were another new addition to <b>Gran Turismo 4</b>, challenging drivers to perfect certain racing skills such as slipstreaming.</p> <p>Gran Turismo players in Europe started their first online races in 2008 thanks to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PlayStation 3. It was the first game in the series to include network features such as online racing, leader boards and GT-TV, a service that allowed players to watch motorsport programmes in-game.</p> <p><b>Take it to the track</b></p> <p><b><br /></b></p> <p><b>Gran Turismo 5 Prologue</b> also unearthed a potential star in Lucas Ordoñez. The winner of the inaugural GT Academy - a search for the fastest GT players in Europe - went on to earn his racing licences, compete in the Dubai 24 Hour Endurance Race as his prize and then became a professional racing driver as a result.</p> <p>GT Academy represents a particularly proud moment for Yamauchi: "It was a dream I had when I first started developing a driving simulator, especially because I was confident that one day it would come true. And when it really came to be in the 2008 GT Academy, it was incredibly exciting."</p> <p>Polyphony Digital switched lanes in 2009 with Gran Turismo on PSP. Speeding onto the handheld entertainment system with over 800 cars and 35 tracks, as well as multiplayer racing and player-to-player car trading, the depth and thrills of an authentic driving experience quickly became a fast favourite for gamers on the move.</p> <p><b>A new industry standard</b></p> <p><b><br /></b></p> <p>The hotly anticipated <b>Gran Turismo 5</b> arrived on PS3 in November 2010, once more shifting the realism of its cars and tracks into a higher gear. Over 1,000 cars featured, from classic automobiles and family runarounds to stunning supercars like the Bugatti Veyron. Real-life racetracks were painstakingly recreated, with classic circuits such as Germany's Nürburgring featuring alongside the sort of inner-city tracks that dreams are made of, allowing drivers to race through the streets of Rome, London and Tokyo.</p> <p>Building on the introduction of online play in its Prologue, the 16 player racing modes featured in <b>Gran Turismo 5</b> were just the beginning. Special timed and seasonal events provided an ever-growing roster of challenges to enter, while the Course Builder mode allowed players to build their own raceways to share with the online community.</p> <p></p> <p>The real world of motorsport was brought ever more into <b>Gran Turismo 5</b>. Racing heroes such as Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel and NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon made cameo appearances, while popular motoring programme Top Gear featured its famous test track. The main one I use is 4-1-2-1-2; this is a balanced formation which is hard for opponents to overcome given the central defensive midfield pairing."</p> <p><b>Team Choice </b></p> <p></p> <p>"Along with the correct formation, picking the right team is equally as important. Whichever one you choose, make sure you get to know it and its strengths really well. My favourite team is Real Madrid and I always try to have the fastest players in my starting line-up as speed can be one of the most decisive factors in winning a game. When I have two players to choose from, I always pick the faster one."</p> <p><b>Adapting tactics</b></p> <p></p> <p>"Even with a good team and a good formation, you must be able to react to whatever your opponent does on the pitch. For example, if I play an opponent who focuses on defence, I use a 4-4-2 formation as this gives me more options to break him down. I even adapt my tactics during the game – if I'm behind, for example, I'll switch to a more attacking formation to try and get back in the game."</p> <p><b>Double pass</b></p> <p></p> <p>"In the game, the double pass, which can be done by pressing the L1 button whilst passing the ball, is very important. It is especially effective between the striker and the attacking midfielder, as it enables the midfielder to run into open space and receive the ball back from the striker."</p> <p><b>Crossing</b></p> <p></p> <p>"Crossing in FIFA 13 is not so easy; however, you can find a lot of space down the wings and this is where faster players such as Arjen Robben and Neymar are most effective. It is important to note that even if you are unable to score from a cross, you can use wingers to dribble the ball or to make a pass, which can be just as effective."</p> <p><b>Tricks</b></p> <p></p> <p>"In one-on-one situations, I usually try to pass rather than using tricks. Nevertheless there times when you cannot manage without tricks. You should perfect at least two or three tricks, which you can use in special situations. My personal favourites are the roulette and the scissor move."</p> <p><b>Ball control</b></p> <p></p> <p>"Being able to control the ball at close quarters is a great way to put pressure on the opposition in their area. Press the L2 button to control the ball and combine this with a quick burst of speed to gain an advantage on your opponent. And unlike NetherRealm Studio's previous Mortal Kombat games, there's no block button - simply pull back on the Left stick to deflect your opponent's blows.</p> <p></p> <p>The circle button is a character specific ability - for example, it lets you switch between Wonder Woman's golden lasso and her sword and shield. When you're near something useful, the R1 button lets you interact with your background with a special attack or dodge. The L1 button throws or grapples your opponent, and pressing the L2 button and R2 button together activates your super move if your power meter at the bottom of the screen is full.</p> <p>Familiarise yourself with these controls and learn a few of the more complex attacks via the Move List in the pause menu. If you have a second wireless controller, you can train with a buddy in the Multiplayer mode or if you don't have a friend nearby just go a few rounds against an static enemy so you can get a feel for the game.</p> <p><b>Become a hero... or villain</b></p> <p>When you're starting off, choose Batman as your fighter - he's quick, agile and has a variety of moves to get you going. Be sure to keep your enemy within close range, however, as the Dark Knight has only a handful of long range attacks.  </p> <p></p> <p>Lex Luthor is more of a tank type brawler - he's heavy, slow and hits hard. Lex also has the ability to create temporary armour which absorbs one hit before he takes damage, making him ideal if you like to relentlessly assault your enemy.</p> <p>Wonder Woman is tricky to master yet flexible once you grasp her various abilities. Her golden lasso is perfect for fast and long range attacks, while her sword and shield stance allows a slower, more defensive variety of moves.</p> <p><b>"Be mindful of your surroundings"</b></p> <p>Use the environment as it can mean the difference between winning and losing. When you're near something which you can interact with, the R1 button icon will flash next to your character's life bar. This means you can kick or punch your opponent into something or bound off the object near you.</p> <p></p> <p>Keep an eye out for use objects such as the passing helicopter and the water tower, as you can use each one to your advantage. Be aware that Batman isn't strong enough to yank heavy objects off the ground, so he's more likely to use the weightier background items defensively.</p> <p>Each object takes time to grab, depending on its size and weight, so don't try using them unless you're a decent distance from your opponent.</p> <p><b>Comic book combos</b></p> <p>Combinations are key to any fighting game, and Injustice: Gods Among Us has a rich combo system that can turn you into a devastating whirlwind of superpowered mayhem. Work out which moves can be linked together - typically start with a fast or jumping attack.</p> <p></p> <p>Slamming your foe off the backgrounds is also effective for starting a short combo or continuing a longer one, so use the R1 button when prompted or pull back and press the X button to knock your rival flying. Sometimes a heavy attack will smash your opponent through a series of walls and objects, causing extra damage.</p> <p>If you're down to your last energy bar and press forward and the X button during your rival's combo, you'll start a clash where you can gamble up to 33 per cent of your character's remaining energy. You can stake up to four sections of your power meter - bet more than your opponent to win. If you started the clash and claim victory, you gain health. Defending against a clash successfully inflicts extra damage on your foe.</p> <p><b>Doomsday... is here</b></p> <p>The monstrous wrecking machine from the planet Krypton is your end of demo boss and he lives up to his fearsome name and reputation. What sort of place could that be? I hit on the idea of an unfinished kingdom and then spent a while thinking about all sorts of unfinished things.</p> <p>It seemed to me that the most unfinished thing in the world is a child whose parents will never have a chance to finish raising them. So that's where the backstory came from. It's something that I'd also thought about a lot when I was a child. It's a pretty horrible thing on both sides which is why I think it still resonates for me so strongly now that I'm at an age where I could have kids myself.</p> <p><b>Are there going to be additional downloadable stories for The Unfinished Swan? (AGT-EU, Germany)</b></p> <p>We don't have any plans for downloadable content. Since just about everything we really wanted to put in the game got in, there isn't a big push for us to do extras. We're a small team, so we'd rather put that energy into making our next game.</p> <p>However, if you've got a copy of PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, there's a battle arena based on The Unfinished Swan that you can download, so you should definitely check that out.</p> <p><b>What's been your greatest achievement in the game during its development? (Sam_Boi9, UK)</b></p> <p><b><br /></b></p> <p>What I'm personally most proud of is that we were able to create a game that encourages players to explore it at their own pace. The challenging part was making it feel open without actually being truly open. We found in playtests that if we didn't give players clues about where to go then they'd wander around aimlessly for hours, which sounds fun but ends up being really tedious. Finding the right balance where players instinctively had a sense of where to go but didn't feel like we were telling them took a lot of tuning but I'm really happy with the result.</p> <p><b>Runners-up questions:</b></p> <p><b>What was it like to work without colour the whole time? (Blackangel320, Germany)</b></p> <p>It felt a little numb to be looking at a black and white world all the time. That's why, towards the end of development, we ended up spending a lot of time making things like ripples in the water, swinging signs and creatures, to give the world some life. That's also part of the reason that we made the story about a world that was uninhabited, since everything already felt desolate.</p> <p><b>What feelings are you hoping to awaken in the player with The Unfinished Swan? To do that we tried to fashion a space where players had no idea what to expect and were in a state of constant discovery. It's a chance for players to experiment with how it feels to confront the unknown.</p> <p><b>What were some of the crazier ideas you guys thought up that didn't make it into the final game? (Syph33r, UK)</b></p> <p>The biggest idea that didn't make it was a river painting mechanic where your water balls would create puddles that were 10 feet deep. We spent six months, on and off, trying to make that interesting but we never found any gameplay that used it, so we scrapped it.</p> <p><b>Which other forms of art and entertainment inspired you whilst making the game? (josh_shift, UK)</b></p> <p>Alice in Wonderland was definitely the single biggest inspiration for us. We also looked a lot at Shel Silverstein, Harold and the Purple Crayon, plus Edward Gorey for how to tell stories that connect with children and adults. Time Bandits was our biggest movie reference, though Jim Henson's Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal were close seconds. Oh, and Spirited Away. Architecturally we were heavily influenced by Escher, Piranesi's etchings of Rome and the surreal French animated film The King and the Mockingbird.</p> <p><b>After working on such a beautiful and touching video game, what do you have in store for your future projects? A compass is on hand to help, whilst helicopters, security lights and guards stand in your way. Outwit your foes by combining Sly's nimble aerial acrobatics and climbing skills, all the while staying aware of your surroundings.</p> <p>Memorising enemies' search patterns is vital, so use Sly's binoculars carefully. Scrutinising the rooftops is the only way to find all the treasures. A blue glow indicates what can be climbed; these telltale sparkles may not offer the most direct route but they can be profitable, leading to extra coins and one of the demo's two Sly tokens.</p> <p><b>High-tech tricks</b></p> <p>Sly meets a dead end when he reaches the museum's security grid. This is when the brains of the team, Bentley the turtle, springs into action. Sitting in his gadget-filled wheelchair, his target is the museum's computer which is accessed through the sewer.</p> <p>Under the streets, the perils are very different. With no need for stealth, bombs are Bentley's weapon of choice. Learning to throw them accurately sees both gates and guards quickly fall by the wayside. The city's waste can cut Bentley's outing short if he drops into it. Luckily his chair is equipped with a jump and boost function, allowing him to navigate the depths easily. Leaping between water tanks and subterranean train lines can be tricky, so watching for Bentley's shadow over a target is a sure-fire route to success.</p> <p>Again, don't just jump towards the goal, because the second Sly token is tucked away here. Simply search the chamber with two trains in it to claim the prize.</p> <p><b>Turtle hacks</b></p> <p>Reaching the computer, Bentley hands the action over to his Bentley Hack computer program. The goal is simple; guide the program to the end of the circuit, while shooting down firewalls and avoiding security. Efficiency is the best way to handle these areas. First head to any yellow keys needed to unlock the path forward. The Bit Cannon helps here, taking out any smaller firewalls, while the Panzer upgrade is needed to wipe out larger obstacles. Bear in mind the upgraded code can't collect keys, so once the path is clear change back into the Shell Code, grab the key and head out.</p> <p><b>The riotous hippopotamus</b></p> <p></p> <p>Hack finished, Murray the hippo springs into action for the final stage. The brawn of Sly's team, he demonstrates no subtlety, happily smashing his way through guards and crates with a variety of attacks.</p> <p>While tough, Murray isn't indestructible, so managing the order you approach guards is wise. A great way to do this is by targeting enemies with long-range weapons and hurling crates at them before they have a chance to attack. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is the result of their teamwork and the game has sped to success on PlayStation 3, reaching the top of the charts in countries including France, Germany and the UK.</p> <p></p> <p>Here, Akihiro Hino explains how two of Japan's most respected studios teamed up to bring us the story of Oliver and his journey into a second world... <br /><br /><b>How and when did the idea to collaborate first arise?</b><br /> <br />Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch originally began as a tenth anniversary project for LEVEL-5. We asked Toshio Suzuki, a producer at Studio Ghibli, if he could help create the animations for our upcoming project, and we were thrilled that he said yes. Studio Ghibli is one of Japan's leading animation studios, so to create something with its team was an honour. LEVEL-5 has aimed to create titles that appeal to a broader audience in recent years, so in that sense we also wanted to learn about the techniques Studio Ghibli uses in its films.<br /> <br /><b>How did the partnership work? </b><br /><br />In terms of the process, Studio Ghibli's director of animation Yoshiyuki Momose drew some concepts, storyboards and character designs based on my written descriptions. We didn't make any specific requests; all we asked of them was that their designs have the famous Ghibli-like style.</p> <p><b>Did Studio Ghibli come up with ideas for specific story elements, characters or monsters?</b></p> <p></p> <p>Yes. In terms of the animation, Mr Momose created the storyboards, which included everything from staging to the dialogue, based on the written materials we provided. In terms of the in-game event scenes, Mr Momose supervised everything from frame compositions to direction during the motion capture sessions. We're quite confident players will sense this Ghibli-like nature throughout the entire game – not just in the animation. <br /> <br /><b>Were there any doubts or worries from either side about how you might work together?</b><br /> <br />I wouldn't say there were any doubts. We were very excited about working on a project with Studio Ghibli. I suppose it was difficult figuring out how to explain what might be different about catering to a gaming audience. Movies last at most two or three hours, but games can run anywhere from ten to over 100 hours. The process is a bit different in terms of keeping the player interested or evoking emotion. <br /><br />I feel that Studio Ghibli's team found game production to be a fresh experience, and overall I think they enjoyed it. They've kindly informed us that it was invigorating to work with such a young and eager crew of creators.</p> <p><b>Did LEVEL-5 have any particular Studio Ghibli movies in mind when developing the game?</b></p> <p></p> <p>We were very conscious about making our scenes in the same style as Studio Ghibli. The development team was constantly playing Ghibli films on the production floor throughout the project, not simply to reference the way characters walk, run or talk, but to absorb the feel of their worlds. <br /> <br /><b>And did Studio Ghibli look to any other video games for inspiration? </b><br /> <br />We discussed a number of games and communicated the appeal of role-playing games. It was Mr Momose's first time being involved in the production of a game, and he showed a lot of interest in the medium and ended up playing a very active role. <br /> <br /><b>What did the team at LEVEL-5 learn from working with Studio Ghibli? </b><br /><br />We learned how important it is to show the little habits of everyday people. Before this project, we tended to move the camera to create the coolest composition possible, or we'd exaggerate character movements for added effect. But the Studio Ghibli animators only move the camera when it's necessary, and instead compose scenes so that the natural movements of the characters are easy on the eye. In fact, if the motion doesn't look perfectly natural, they prefer not to show it at all. Not only does this provide the viewer with a greater sense of realism, but the level of empathy is totally different.  <br /> <br /><b>Might this be the start of an ongoing partnership? </b><br /><br />LEVEL-5 would of course love the opportunity to work on a project with Studio Ghibli again. If we could adapt one of its films into a game, Castle in the Sky would be interesting. Here you'll pick up vital techniques on special attacks, blocking, parrying and combos. </p> <p>These early battles are essential to master, as the computer-controlled opponents are a lot more forgiving than other fellow gamers you'll face in the multiplayer modes. Don't be afraid to replay these training stages to brush up on your skills until you're confident of your battle prowess.</p> <p><b>Choose your god wisely</b></p> <p>Before you leave the Rotunda of Olympus, choose which god you'll pledge your allegiance to. In this Beta, you can pick between Zeus or the Greek god of war, Ares.</p> <p>If you're a combo brawler who likes close combat, give Ares a try. You'll be blessed with defence-crippling fire magic and items to give you the edge in physical confrontations. However, if you prefer a more tactical fight, pick Zeus. With the Greek god of thunder and lightning on your side, you're able to call down powerful electrical magic to stun opponents, as well as use items which improve your defence.</p> <p><b>The art of war </b></p> <p></p> <p>Victory is all about balancing attack and defence - going all out will only get you so far before you come up against an opponent who will overpower you. Parry regular attacks to stun your rival, and wear down stubborn blockers with throws and defence-smashing special moves. Quick attacks can get you out of a fix and swiftly dodging can earn you precious seconds and space to counter.</p> <p><b>Essential arena awareness</b></p> <p>Hercules' pit has wall spikes which you can slam your opponents into for extra damage. It can also give you time to collect any items or power-ups that materialise in the arena.</p> <p>If you're feeling sneaky, you can push your foe out of the ring for a quick victory. Play it smart and you can lure a powerful enemy into attacking you while you're close to the edge of the arena. Then quickly roll out of the way as they start their combo and strike them from behind - gravity will do the rest...</p> <p><b>Herculean hassles </b></p> <p>Demigod Hercules isn't just a passive observer during your fight - he takes part in it, too. If he opens up the cave below his throne, rush inside to activate a trap switch. This rains down deadly arrows onto the arena and, hopefully, your hapless foe.</p> <p>Also listen out for when Hercules screams in rage, as he'll leap down into the pit and create a devastating shock wave that can stun any warriors caught in it. Time your jump perfectly and you can take advantage of your opponents' carelessness.</p> <p><b>Stick with it, Spartan</b></p> <p></p> <p>Even if you're getting hammered by a merciless adversary, don't quit the game. You'll get bonuses for completing the match, which you'll need to make your Champion stronger.</p> <p>If you know there's no way to win the match, focus on completing achievements which can give your character a boost for future battles.
